Welcome, Liz.
Your first step is to join an existing unit. If there is none in your area,
you could maybe start a new unit, but that is a big job for someone new to
SAR. The unit, and in some cases the area SAR community or agency having
jurisdiction, sets requirements.
In Ohio there are numerous MSAR units with web pages[1], and there may be
other units too.
Crawford County is in north central Ohio. I guess you already looked at [1]
because you have identified the nearest unit listed there, in Knox County.
