It may not be statute (except for minors in NY state) but most loss control
managers realize that making employees (including unpaid ones)
Wear proper protective equipment on the job saves a lot in workman's comp
claims, lost time, and lawsuits. The Harbor Medical (Seattle, WA) studies
indicate that if a head injury is serious enough to warrant an ER visit,
over 60% will result in an overnight or longer hospital stay, and some that
don't go to the ER will die of undiagnosed intracranial hemmorage.
Interestingly enough, people who wear helmets don't get injured as often in
other ways as well. Seems to be cultural fallout-- helmet wearers think
safety all the time.
