I have seen dogs transported in panniers (pack horses), and across the saddle.  However, any large working dog would probably need a pack saddle or a pannier.

This would require teaching the dog to stay in the bag as it were.  If the animal was injured in any significant manner perhaps a litter board on top of the pack frame would work but I personally would not want a hundred pounds or so of injured dog sharing a saddle with me, no matter how restrained.

Guys,

For possible inclusion as a course at the Washington State SAR Conference we are discussing the possibilities of  K-9 evacuation using horses. We have some Ideas on this could be accomplished. But to prevent us from reinventing the wheel let me ask. Have any of your units developed specialized procedures or equipment or expertise in this area. If you would be willing to share it I would really like to hear from you.
