Generators kill more people every year because the owners put portables
where the CO comes back into the property or fail to maintain the exhaust
pipes.
Refilling hot generators causes fires with both gasoline and propane fired
units.
If you use extension cords for critical loads with a portable remember to
check them out before hand.
Storing motor fuels in barns only adds to the chance of fire, a fire you
can't fight because of the ice on the ground and the pond.
The added load of ice (or snow) on roofs can cause structural
failure/collapse. The horses can usually take the cold, the roof can't.
In some cases trying to clear snow off the roof has led to collapse with
injuries.
Wires that are down on the ground can change the ground potential for
hundreds of feet. The difference in potential can kill, and has killed
several horses just standing near but not in contact with surviving lines on
the property that were down about a mile away.
And then there are the usual cold weather problems- frostbite, brittle
metal, vehicles that don't start, radio batteries that freeze, the IP
telephone that doesn't work without power.......
