It is not just that helmets are a good idea for safety, look uniform
somewhat, everybody else has one (fire, EMS, SWAT, pilots) in some
jurisdictions they may even be required. NY has a horse helmet law for
instance. It can also be seen as a commitment to the chain of command- the
order is wear a helmet and you do.
The bottom line is that it is your head and you only get one. Most of the
head injury studies for horse accidents were done in the Seattle area. Our
SOG's require an ASTM/British standard helmet, chest protector optional,
high boots, gloves, chaps highly recommended.
