Every horse and every rider has to start somewhere. It is up to the rider,
and the MSAR organization to determine what is safe for the beginner and how
to bring them along to the point where they are relatively safe on a
training mission or real mission. This may mean taking long hacks or trail
rides with a green rider/horse combination to gain confidence and skills
before introducing them to the roaring herd or a real mission. In many
cases a MSAR rider has non-MSAR riding companions and this type of offline
activity is extremely important in tuning other horse skills and people
skills.
No one is ever experienced enough to start riding search as a clue aware
searcher on horseback when they arrive at your doorstep, unless you are
stealing them from another MSAR organization.
I have been doing this for close to 20 years and I still think of myself and
my mount as green.
