I had one of these "unusual" cases. A field research colleague
with a PLS in Montana was expected in the Moab Utah area, but
failed to meet the rest of his party there. Four days later he
turned up 1000 miles away in California, at his parents' house.
This was a case where thorough investigation (ie, asking a lot
of questions) paid off. The Utah portion of the search was
limited to a hasty search of area trailheads for the subject's
vehicle, plus rudimentary containment (ie, briefing attendants
at the few gas stations in the area with a description of the
subject and vehicle).
