Another rule of thumb, when meeting or passing on a narrow trail,
is faster yields to slower. That keeps everyone safer than the
other way around. In some places it seems to be widely understood
that any horse is in sight everyone not on a horse must stop, move
clear off the trail, and if on a mountain bike, dismount. For an
MSAR mount, such a degree of accomodation should be unnecessary.
An air scenting dog may or may not also discriminate scent. The
issue with horses "contaminating" the dog's search area is merely
that a dog not already well used to horses may be distracted from
its work.
