- Subject: [MSAR] Hurricane medical response
- Date: Tue, 30 Aug 2005 09:08:50 -0700
The devastation wreaked by Hurricane Katrina left hundreds of thousands of people in shelters, unable to return to their homes. A massive Red Cross effort to provide shelters includes providing a First Aid station at each shelter. This is particularly critical since local hospitals and clinics may not be accessible or may have been evacuated.
Volunteers in the medical field are sought for immediate deployment of minimum 7 days, preferably 2 weeks or even longer. This includes EMT and above, and people in the mental health field trained to help people cope with disaster. All travel expenses are paid.
This disaster medical response is a collaborative effort of American Red Cross and the Medical Reserve Corps, a nationwide Citizen Corps program under the Department of Homeland Security.
Qualified volunteers in the medical field are encouraged to contact their local chapter of American Red Cross if they are available to leave in the next few days.
