point of clarification: all training is valuable and highly regarded. we
can all never train enough to do the job we do. and do be a SAR provider,
medical licensure is not a required component of training, though obviously
the
more we are willing to do, the better we all are!
however, it is incorrect that an instructor in new mexico can apply to the
state for acceptance of their course for licensure. the courses currently
accepted are:
all ems classes at: ENMU Roswell
UNM EMS Academy
Dona Ana Branch Community College
WMA classes IF TAUGHT BY an instructor
affiliated with the
above institutions.
The committee by law in New Mexico that approves any class's eligibility
for NM Licensure is the Joint Organization on Education (JOE). And that
committee's decisions are subject to the statewide Medical Direction
Committee (MDC)
review.
(a panel of emergency physicians around the state who meet quarterly about
these types of issues, scopes of practice, etc.) Having been on that
committee
for many years, I have seen American Red Cross, National Ski Patrol, National
Safety Council, and numerous Wilderness Programs denied acceptance.
Not that the course is looked down on or prevents someone from using it for
First Aid purposes, it is simply not approved for licensure---and the
licensure
really only matters for things like personal liability insurance, ability to
be involved with other local EMS agencies. For all of you out there in
other
states, do not be discouraged--New Mexico has some of the toughest licensure
regs in the nation.
But I do highly recommend anyone check with their state agency to simply
clarify where a particular course stands so that you do indeed purchase what
you
want !
