For those who aren't aware, at the local level there may be some adjusting in how you apply the Incident Command System (ICS) to be consistent with the new NIMS (National Incident Management System) that provides national standards for incident management from local to federal level.

NIMS is based on the model created by CA's statewide SEMS (Standardized Emergency Management System) and adapted for nationwide application. Converting to NIMS will be required in order to receive federal grant money. Good leverage for compliance. ;)

Most SAR already uses ICS, but locally may use a version somehow tweaked from the Fire version. Going forward, incidents that are of a scale where it becomes multi-agency response - or involves Mutual Aid or higher levels of assistance - will need to utilize the standard ICS to have nationwide consistency within NIMS. If you're in a command position you should become familiar with the big picture to see how you fit in the new national standard.
