I am with a mounted search and rescue unit in SC.  We utilize dragging in our qualificiation test for each mount, where the horse has to pull from the rear and then turn around and pull toward their head, for approx. 50 feet.  We have also used pulling telephone poles and brush piles as a training and conditioning technique.  We are in the process of modifying our gourney to be able to be pulled from horseback.

I had some interesting discussion regarding possible options for MSAR at the SAR City conference this weekend. How many of you use / train to use your mounts in Technical Rescue? Not just as transportation, but based on modified "weight drag" training actually use the mount as an anchor when there isn't an obvious other anchor available? Or even use the mount for pulling?
