Jorene,
I recently purchased goldfish to keep in my horses water containers this keeps them nasty bugs from breeding in the tanks. I was also told in albuquerque they were giving fish away to keep still water moving.

Mexico has just declared a West Nile Virus emergency. Vaccines haven't been effective protecting their horses. "The U.S. Agriculture Department reported that about a third of the 15,000 horses infected in 2002 died." http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/07/15/sprj.wnv.mexico.reut/index.html

This has been a bad "bug" year for us locally. We chose to not give WNV vaccine having heard from many sources of tragic results in breeding programs - we breed Paints - and the reports of deformed foals, etc., keep coming in. The Ft Dodge WNV vaccine is the suspected cause.

I hope everyone is making a serious effort at mosquito abatement! If anyone has a particularly effective method, now is a great time to share ...
