ARRL, the US national association for amateur radio, has a new
*online* series of three courses in emergency communications.
The first course (EC-001) has been recommended to me by several
experienced New Mexico SAR volunteers who have already taken it.
See http://www.remote.arrl.org/cce/ for details.
To enroll in the course you must be a licensed amateur radio
operator (HAM). Getting a HAM license is easy! A Technician-
class license does not require you to know Morse code: you
need only pass an exam of 35 multiple-choice questions. You
can take practice exams online: http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl.
Or you can buy a training manual online or at businesses such
as Radio Shack, or try your local public library or radio club.
Then find an ARRL exam opportunity scheduled near where you
live: http://www.remote.arrl.org/arrlvec/examsearch.phtml.
