Sorry I cannot be of much help, but here at 48N, I sow long day onions
(Cortland, Redwing) in flat in late February. They do just fine when
transplanted in early May, although they are a little late (dry storage
harvest of Cortland in August, Redwing in September).

Perhaps you will get an earlier harvest from short-day varieties, as
they would start bulbing earlier? Maybe you should try long- and
short-day type side-by-side as an experiment?

As an aside, I would not recommend Cortland and RedWing to be sold as
green-top bunched onion. They are excellent for dry storage, but at the
green stage, they get to 8-10 big thick leaves, making them unwieldly to
bunch. For bunching, I like Norstar better.
