Beth, you can calculate the shadow length you will get on day of the winter solstice, and that will give you the longest possible shadow of the year for your new house.  Keep your southerly house that distance away and you should be OK.  All you have to do is multiply the height of your new house (the south one) by .404 and you will get the shadow length at noon.  There is a small catch, though.  This calculated length has to be measured from the center of your new  house out toward the old house, not from the wall.

In other words, .404 times the height of new house = distance from center of new house to the end of its shadow on the north side.  This is on the first day of winter and is the longest shadow the house will ever cast, since the sun is higher in the sky the rest of the year.

I'm pretty sure of my calculations, but I would check with others before you go ahead and put up the new house.

If this doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll try to 'splain it better.

We have lot line issues where I want to put a tunnel to serve as a wash station/packing shed, maybe spring greenhouse.  We are looking at gothic tunnels with 5 or 6 foot high walls (yes, need to find total height out for this question).  It will be due south of our current hoophouse (45 latitude, think Burlington VT but a little north).  Anyone know guidelines for how much space I need to leave in between so the current tunnel doesn’t get winter shade?  That distance will determine the width of the new tunnel.  Thank you.
