I don't recall which one, but one of my gardening books talks about how
planting carrots and onion next to each other can help ward off carrot fly and
onion fly. The carrot fly dislikes onion, and the onion fly dislikes
carrot. Alternate the rows and harvest entire rows at one time, to
minimize the disturbance which also draws the flies. I don't know that
we've ever had either pest, but we've grown carrot and onion next to each other
forever and I've never had one taste like the other. Just a
possibility........
