I have built my veg washing station( still fine-tuning it) with the help of friends by using a two bay watertrough ( new poly material) and added a spa blower, ozone water injector & injectors inline, and two spa pumps with filters. some valves and all that dumps into a line outside that catches and residual sediment. Than that transfers into a holding tank I buried which I connected to a sump pump that transfers all the water to a sprinkler head in my paddock which waters the grass for the horse to graze on in summer months. I use a water ph meter and ozone tester to make sure the water is good and do not have to use chlorine to wash with. Still a few more things to do like space the holes in the pipes which transmit the bubbles and water recirculation but other than that I washed 100 bunches of torpedo onions, purple spring onions and some other ones today in it. I use a plastic crate that has tons of openings in it to dip and go. I use one side to rinse and than a final dip in the clean side rinse. Very fast and two or 4 people can work on it at one time.

Human caused global warming sucks.

Just water. No sewer costs added in.
We are in one of the worst droughts in YEARS, and we are having extremely
high temps to go along with that. We were watering about 4 acres of
veggies, but we keep cutting back and letting crops "go". Years ago we
pumped water out of the pond, but it's dried up with no help from us.
Same with our little well. There's not much ground water under us so
drilling another well would be pointless.

I don't know. It was a shock to say the least. I was expecting it to be
around 800 dollars.

"If your experience is that your water comes from the tap and that your
food comes from the grocery store then you are going to defend to the
death the system that brings those to you because your life depends on
that; if your experience is that your water comes from a river and that
your food comes from a land base then you will defend those to the death
because your life depends on them. So part of the problem is that we have
become so dependent upon this system that is killing and exploiting us, it
has become almost impossible for us to imagine living outside of it and
it's very difficult physically for us to live outside of it."

We've been market farming for 9 years now. Every summer we have one or two water bills that are high. In the past, 800 dollars was the highest it had ever been. Last months bill was 600, and now 1500. I'm sure next months will be equally high.
This will be one of those years where breaking even will be a good thing. The sad part is: market sales have been really good. This past Saturday was the best Saturday we've had in that 9 years. So, we were feeling pretty good, until the water bill came today!
We can't plant anything for fall, at least not right now. Soil temps are too high to germinate any seed, never mind the cost of putting out drip, and yes, more water.

I have been washing on a wire table in the driveway in front of our garage.
I would like to move the washing down to the field. I have a 10 x 40 foot
strip of geotextile fabric and a 10 x 20 carport. I am hemming and hawing
about whether to put the geotextile down in one long strip, or cut it in two
and have a 20 x 20 foot area of sand on geotextile fabric. Outside from the
carport would be an old bathtub for cleaning/sanitizing Buckhorns and trays.
Inside would be washing/packing tables, tote storage, people, short term
product storage (several hours or overnight for tomatoes, cucurbits, etc).

Longterm hope is to have the wash area inside a (future) hoophouse, so I
expect the wash tables to be along one side, with catchment underneath
moving washwater outside of the carport. I don't have a roots washer but
hope one is in my future.

If movement was from one end to the other, then having the long strip makes
sense. But it might be more efficient to drive up alongside to unload and
load rather than walk things to/from the end.

Your thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.

In my experience, stringent harvest processes and storage standards are key to germination rates.

How many of you are successfully saving seed, thus controlling input costs? We've been saving a greater number of our seed strains but continue to have lower germination rates. Suggestions for overcoming poor germination rates?

We're in the midst of a small SVB trial with Cornell using omri
approved materials. No news yet but I'll report back in a few weeks with
our findings.

Thanks for all your ideas. I have a 30 psi regulator in the
greenhouse, I can turn off some of the lines & try it in the field
tomorrow. If this works I'll just be turning valves more often, which
is better than having 1/3 of every row languish from lack of water.

A dedicated well for the plants & animals sure would be nice.. maybe
in a few more years. Really feel for those of you on municipal water
or in areas without an accessible aquifer- we're very fortunate here
in the midwest.

Once this water problem is solved I can go back to hunting the squash
vine borers with my pocket knife...

I can't say what would work best for you, but our wash area used to be in the field, but once we got our walk in cooler, we moved the wash area close to the cooler.
I'm able to pull my truck right up next to it. I like this because I have the option of using the tailgate for boxing and sorting if I need to, and the convenience of not having to carry anything very far.
I have a 100 gallon Rubbermaid tank that sits on pallets. Then 2 other smaller ones that sit side by side. Then I have other pallets that I can put the clean containers on to pack into. The whole set up makes a "U" shape. It's small and only 1 person can be washing at a time, but it works. I'd like it better if it were bigger (wider) so that 2 people could be working, but then I'd need another person :) I use an old EZ up tent for shade, so all of this is under that.
Hope this helps,
Carla, Perkins, OK

Hmmmmmmm...the question here would be:

"Do I want to make sure I am legal by checking with local code folk
on the disposal of the water from this operation?"

And, its questions like that that kept me working with a hose under a tree
in the back yard.and doing hand washing in the house.
