Pech asked about growing pole beans on sweet corn...
As I see the challenge with pole beans growing on sweet corn:
The corn is too easily pulled down by the weight of the vines and the
wind catching them. Sweet corn, in general, falls over easier than
many field corns.
But if someone has a reliable combo of a certain sweet corn and pole
beans that grow and produce well on it, please chime in.
Some pole beans produce better than others in the (partial) shade of
corn. Those that do are traditionally called 'cornfield beans'. And,
certain types of field corn have very strong stalks that are less
likely to fall over (lodge). Common practice hereabouts it to
cultivate by piling up soil against the base of the stalks, that extra
sets of prop roots can support the corn.
For more specifics, see SouthernExposure.com, where they describe
their cornfield bean varieties.
Am thinking about the three sisters of corn, beans and squash, as
another system of undersowing, where the overall yield of all three
traditionally exceeded the yield of separate monocrops on the same
sized plot. Anyone producing crops for market by growing these three
together, even two of these three together?
