How about greater light penetration at the edges, as well as less competition for nutrients and water for the plants at the fringe?  The plants "living on the edge" only have competition on side of them.  The further the outer plants' roots extend out, the more they can benefit from less competition from other plants.

in permaculture they feel all the action is at the edges something about the change from this to that.

Does anyone know why the mesclun on the edge of the beds grows 10 times faster/better than the rest? They are 3 ft wide beds in a hoop house. Fairly even moisture and fertilizer. But the plants on the outside of the beds always grow better. The only thing I can think of is that the edges naturally get compressed a bit more and the centers stay fluffier. This soil is sandy clay/loam.

Thanks in advance,

Wendy
