Mike,

Forward what I sent you into the market farming list where the discussion about SB510 was.
Those wanting proof of authenticity of that article can read the following and go to the
Meatingplace Industry News - PM website and find out for themselves.

Lawrence,
Have you got an original article I can reference?

No, it came from a commercial site requiring paid login.
The original must have come from a whistleblower :-)
Here's what I got from someone in the know about this:
"The list of the 30 industrial ag signers of the letter contrasts
wonderfully with the over 120 organizations which have signed on
supporting Sens. Tester's and Hagan's amendment.
Unfortunately, S 510 is fatally flawed and they couldn't rally enough
support to fix everything. Thus, we need to defeat it. That depends on
the Republican's voting against cloture.
We need more phone calls to Senators tomorrow morning. We expect the
vote will be in the afternoon. "
That says it all. We need to call our senators and ask them to vote against SB510
this afternoon so it can be defeated and we will then have to opportunity to start
over with a new bill to be done correctly and fairly for small farmers, markets and
market gardeners everywhere.

Lawrence

Most respectfully,
Mike Rock

Food groups oppose exempting small, local shops from safety protocols

By Rita Jane Gabbett on 11/15/2010

More than 30 groups representing poultry, meat and other fresh food
makers sent a letter today to legislators asking them to oppose an
amendment to the Food Safety Modernization Act that would exempt some
small food producers, such as farmers' market vendors, from certain
food safety protocols. A copy was made available to Meatingplace.
"We believe an operation's size, the growing practices used, or its
proximity to customers does not determine whether the food offered is
safe," the groups said in a letter to Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), who
chairs the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and
ranking minority committee member Sen. Michael Enzi (R-Wy.). "What
matters is that the operation implements prudent product safety
practices, whether the product is purchased at a roadside stand, a
farmers' market or a large supermarket.

"We believe technical assistance, training, extended transition
timeframes for compliance and financial support are more appropriate
ways to assist small businesses throughout the food distribution
chain to comply with important food safety standards," the letter
added.

Groups signing the letter included, among others, the American Meat
Institute, National Chicken Council, National Meat Association,
National Pork Producers Council and National Turkey Federation.
