I work with computers professionally. It's easier to keep infections
off your computer than to get them off once they're there. Many
infections can't be removed by AV programs once they're on the
computer because they're running in memory and load automatically when
you boot your computer. The only way to remove them is to boot the
computer without using the Windows installed on the computer. Most
users don't have the capability of doing this so the only solution is
to take it to a good computer shop and have them do it for you.
Reinstalling Windows will NOT get rid of many infections so there's no
point in doing that, and if the computer shop suggests that as a
solution, take your computer elsewhere to a place where they know what
they're doing. In general free AV programs are worth what you pay for
them. Many of them as well as some of the well known commercial ones
are so heavy on machine resources that you may as well live with the
slowness from infections. Two of the best are NOD32 and Avira -
small, fast and effective.

But nowadays a good AV is not enough. You also need to keep your
Windows up to date and every other program you use on the internet up
to date as well: Java, Flash, Adobe Reader, your web browser, etc.
Generally it's better to use Firefox or Chrome rather than Internet
Explorer as IE is being constantly attacked and new security holes are
found regularly. An AV program alone won't do the job if you don't
keep these other programs up to date.
