Mark, Here a couple of ideas: consider whether you have the capacity to
sell CSA shares and whether you could get a core group of individuals and
families to buy shares. Perhaps there are farmers market customers who’d
be interested in signing on. Another strategy may be to take your best produce to area
restaurants, cafes and small groceries and offer samples. It’s important
to remember that you will need to give them all a reason to care about what you
are offering. It may be that you need to carve out a niche product or two, not
more tomatoes or zucchini, but specialty peppers or baby eggplant (all just
examples) or fresh salad mix at a time of year when it’s not available. See
if you can set up meetings with the chefs or owners of these businesses and ask
them what products they are interested in and whether you could grow it for
them. You’d be surprised how often they are willing and interested in
working with their area farmers. Keep your foot in the door and keep the
conversation going. Also, you may end up needing many small accounts, farmers
markets, roadside sales, etc. in order to make a go of it, at least to start.
Good luck! Nora Keets’
