 They all work if you don;t mind pumpkins buried in weeds. IMO, the idea looks better on paper than in real life. I found that perennial weeds like nutsedge and thistle love rye strips.

A number of years ago we were doing a job south of Boston at a greenhouse range surrounded by a hundred or more acres of what looked like shoulder high weeds, which it was, but also planted to
squash and pumpkins.
 
Their thinking was interesting: "we cultivate heavily till they start to run, then let the weeds go. That weed cover is giving us 10 degrees of freeze protection"
