I know absolutely nothing about it, but I've gotten some catalogs recently that show red plastic under strawberries and tomatoes. Ads tout ripening effects. You might look into it. Where we are (Oklahoma) many growers are growing strawberries as an annual--planting in the fall, growing through the winter, picking in the spring and then tilling in.

We're thinking of planting strawberries in a high tunnel using black
plastic on the beds to cut down on weeds but I'm wondering if the beds
will get too hot in the summer. I guess white plastic is an option
too. Almost am a bit concerned about slugs and how that might affect
them. We are thinking of cutting 4 inch holes in the plastic so
perhaps a circle of sand around each plant would discourage the slugs.
