If you want a high quality wheel hoe that is similar to Glasser and the model shown at planetwhiz call Mascot Sharpening in Ronks PA. at 717-6566486 and request a brochure. it sells for $115. If you want a motorized very narrow row cultivator call Swampy Hollow Mfg. ask for the Ground hog cultivator brochure. They are in Honey Brook PA. 610-2730157. They don't have web sites they both serve the plain comunity... Bob.Sunny Meadow FarmBridgeton, NJ.

I am also looking at buying a wheel hoe. Any thoughts on the whizbangvs. the valley oak wheel hoe?I am willing to invest the extra money if the value is there. But also wanting to be frugal where it is needed. Sometimes it is hard to decide. I have an old wheel hoe with the huge wheel in front, but as I'm a small woman, 5'1", I just cannot manage that dinosaur one more year.BarbFront Range Colorado_______________________________________________ Market-farming mailing list Market-farming AT lists.ibiblio.org http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/market-farming----- Original Message -----From: Ryan PlatteTo: Market FarmingSent: Thursday, February 04, 2010 7:51 AMSubject: Re: [Market-farming] Weed control advice?Josh and all,1) I know I'm bonkers. Thanks for the specific data on how bonkers. :-) I'm diving in with both feet to find out what it takes. Keeping commitments to customers low, etc.
2) I am planning on involving some (maybe quite a lot of!) help. This may well include plastic, especially for widely-spaced crops.3) If I've got, say, 10" between rows in a particular bed, would I use a 10" hoe for that, or an 8"?4) If I'm doing 16" between rows in a particular bed, would you recommend 8", 14", or 16"? Soil is on the clayey side.Sheila, thanks for the lead on Valley Oak -- looks like a very attractive option!

An acre and a half, you know that is more than 65,000 square feet dont you ? Something on the order of 218 feet by 300 feet, It can be done with hand tools, but youll have to spend more time than part time or limited scheduel, other wise you might consider herbicides, or plastics, or heavy mulch.josh

Subject: Re: [Market-farming] Weed control advice?Hi all, I'm a new veggie farmer planning my first big season after tooling around for a while. I just joined and read some of the previous messages in this thread.I'm in the wheel hoe market and considering both the Planet Whizbang and this one:I'm also considering the ridiculously-priced one from Johnny's because it supports multiple widths and configurations. I'm planning to sow in beds with long rows 16" or 10" apart, depending on the crop. I haven't used a wheel hoe before, so if someone can tell me that I'm nuts to spend that kind of money and that I'll be fine without this particular tool, I'm all ears.I'm planning 1.5 acres of plantings on a limited schedule, so it's possible that I'm that rare person for whom this is the right trade-off.What do you think?_______________________________________________
