In my situation, direct marketing through CSAs and via a roadside stand, certification often enables me to make that first connection with a potential customer.  They are often looking for organic farms and  find me through Local Harvest, my website, the NOFA Organic Food Guide and contact me.  Without the certification they may not make that initial contact.

I have also found that after the first year the paperwork involved in maintaining my certification really isn't very onerous and is mostly recordkeeping I would be doing whether I was certified or not.
