Andy,
We use a Rain-flo waterwheel with two wheels on it and four seats.
The pros: simple, very adjustable, best--you get to hand set each plant in, feel the soil, be down at ground level. You don't have any misses unless you are totally asleep.
The cons: waterwheels get all gunked up on bare soil and need to be scraped every 600 feet or so, depending on conditions and how much of control freak you are. Probably much slower than a carousel/gripper type planter.
