Your idea of rolling down buck wheat is a good one. There are other things you can plant to roll down in a similar way. Here's a web site regarding the roller.

any experience w/ inexpensive organic fertigation w/ drip tape?

also, organic control of weeds between plastic-covered beds? i was
thinking about sowing buckwheat and then rolling it to kill it. we've
tried using clovers, but they needed to be mowed and then died out.
