Another very useful clue is a "yellow belly". A well yellowed ground
spot. It is a good idea to never turn a melon; if you pick it up to
examine it, replace it with the same spot down. It is said that you
can judge a melon both by "thumping" it and noticing the glossy
appearance turning dull. I use both the near tendril and the belly
color. You can open a few melons in the field to calibrate both those
indicators.
