I buy all my soils premixed but when I made my own I always used perlite.
Perlite adds aeration to the root system, you can not have enough aeration
in the mix. Always ask for the coarsest horticultural perlite when making
potting soils for plants being transplanted after the seedling stage. I
only used vermiculite in the seedling trays mixed with peat and superfine
vermiculite as a seed topping. Vermiculite holds water and allows seedling
roots to pull apart easily and improves the caution exchange capacity in
the mix. Today I use mostly Sunshine brand No 4 agrrate mix which has a
little of both perlite and vermiculite for my farm transplants and the
best mix that I prefer for long term potted crops is composted pine bark
mixes which use no perlite or vermiculite... Bob
