Last year, i bought a sack of corn gluten to test in a few spots. One
bed had been full of Solanum Burbankii ( Garden Huckleberry aka Sunberry)
with it's many unpicked fruits.. Come Spring, thousands of seedlings
came up as expected. I lightly raked the bed, scattered the gluten,
watered a bit and watched. That bed received determinate paste tomatoes
that year. Before i could get around to spreading my mulch of paper and
spoiled hay, the corn gluten really kept those seedlings in check for a
good month. I tried it in a few other beds into which only transplants
went - and was satisfied that it kept weed germination checked for
awhile. I was surprised that with the corn odor all around the beds that
the rampant wildlife in this forested area that all the critters didn't
come running at night to feed, but they didn't - or just didn't discover
it last season. i will buy more, but wishing for a better price locally.
The stuff i bought might have been about 15.00 for only 25 lbs......and
appeared to be patented. I no longer have the sack it came in, but would
like a better source.
