Mel,
Yes, one does need to leave the asparagus spears/canes until they are dried.
When we moved, and left an asparagus patch for renters, they mowed the row
when mowing their lawn. It only took about one season of that for the
asparagus to disappear.
Some say that the dried canes should be burned or removed from its patch so
disease does not spread.

Perhaps this was already covered, I hope not. Do most of you leave the
last of the season spears alone to grow into tall plants? I had read
that this should be done to allow the roots to spread and increase for
the next season. Is this right? And do you eventually cut these down;
either in winter or ?
This is our first experience with an asparagus bed in the midwest. It
produced fairly well this year, but we're not sure what to do to
increase next year's production. (The asparagus bed is about 6 years
old, btw)
