For what it's worth:
We use them here to produce thousands (38,000 in
past 4years, only 22,400 this year) of seedings of medicinal plants (so far
catnip, echinacea, scutellaria, boneset [Eupatorium perfoliatum] and joe pye
weed [E. maculatum] ).
On the advice of both botanists, I have never
sterilized them, just cleaned with water and stored away........we have not had
any problems due to disease, so maybe just lucky also?
One comment - sure is hard to get the plugs
out - we have to poke each opening on the bottom with nails - we use a board
with nails spaced so we plop each tray down once or twice on top, but can't
imagine that amount of labor if we had to make a profit on each
seedling......
