Doreen - I have looked and looked for plans for worm boxes that would mimic the commercial bins that say you don't have to sort the worms out of the castings. Please share sources for the plans you have found. I would love to have the castings fall through or make tiered systems so the worms would move up. I am curious about how to know when to add a second tier if using the tiered systems.
Thank you.
I have two worm boxes and the worm castings/compost is the only fertilizer I
use with my transplants. They seem to thrive on it and the peppers and
tomatoes actually grow faster in the potting soil/worm casting mix.
If you crush extra eggshells into the mix for tomato seedlings, they don't
get either BER (as easily) or that purple cast to the leaves that often
happen when the tomato seedlings are growing quickly.
There are plenty of plans for screen-bottomed worm boxes for growers (so
you can have a larger box and not waste time sorting worms from castings).
As long as you keep the box where it won't freeze and with a secure lid so
that varmints can't eat your worms, it's a great way to get top-notch
fertilizer from one's scraps.
