Bill,
What organic fertilizers have you found that work well and can be used in a
drip irrigation system (fertigation) without clogging emitters?
I have been growing hydroponically for 7+ years and since I began farming I have been looking for an organic alternative. The problem with organic fertilizers is that they develop filamentous bacteria which clogs up things like emitters. I suspect if you were religious about flushing your lines after each use with peroxide you might get around the problem. In my system, which is contiguously recirculating this is impossible. The only organic nutrient I know about that is water soluble and does not cause these problems is one used by a Brazilian friend of mine who runs chicken manure through a three stage aerobic and anaerobic biodigester. The resulting nutrient is water soluble, can be stored and does not develop filamentous bacteria.
I have wanted to find somebody who is willing to do a demonstration grant which would pay for him to come to the US and do a workshop or series of workshops on the construction and use of these biodigesters. Only one has been built in the US, in Missouri, but I don't think it is in use any more because the grower went out of business. It is an excellent solution to the problem of waste disposal and can be used for chicken, pork or dairy wastes. He has built them small scale for family farms and large scale for major piggeries.
(I would have built one already but my greenhouse is on leased land and I don't want to manage a henhouse from a distance.)
