Our very successful and rapidly growing six year old, producer-only farmers' mkt. is undergoing some growing pains. We are now a year-round market, with approx. daily summer attendence of 2500-3000, and are located in the Northeast. Up to this point our vendors have been under very strict guidelines as to what products they could bring. Our vendor relations committee carefully considered each application to determine if the market could support the vendor's product. Some vendors were put on a waiting list until it was determined that the market would benefit from the product. Every attempt was made to keep a good "mix" of products with several vendors for each product to add the benefits of competition, but we also wanted to maintain diversity in our product offering, without flooding the market with one item. A recent decision was made by our board to allow any vendor to bring any product that they produce, regardless of how many other vendors may bring the same thing.
My question to you all is...what is the policy regarding vendor products at other long standing and successful markets? Thanks for your experiences!
