Dear Friends:

The Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program is pleased
to announce that Jean-Paul Courtens, Peter Kenagy and Ron Macher are the
winners of SARE's 2004 Patrick Madden Award contest, a biannual prize for
producers who are not only profitable, but also value the environment and
their communities. SARE is funded by the Cooperative State Research,
Education, and Extension Service (CSREES), USDA, and works with producers,
researchers, and educators to promote farming systems that are profitable,
environmentally sound, and good for communities.

Jean-Paul Courtens, of Kinderhook, N.Y, runs one of the largest, most
innovative community-supported agriculture farms in the country, raising more
than 50 organic vegetables and distributing them to residents through an
arrangement that allows people to buy "shares" in the farm in exchange for
weekly deliveries of fresh produce.

Albany, Ore., vegetable grower Peter Kenagy safeguards his land and the
Willamette River through ambitious stewardship measures, such as conservation
tillage, soil-saving cover crops and riverside buffers.

Diversified vegetable and livestock producer Ron Macher of Clark, Mo., earns
profits with his value-added meat, feed and open-pollinated corn and sells
commodities like katahdin lamb, heirloom chicken and vegetables through
diverse outlets.

SARE's judging panel also recommended that more than 30 producers be
recognized as honorable mentions in the contest. Visit
http://www.sare.org/coreinfo/madden2004_winners.htm for a complete list of
award winners, honorable mention recipients, and more information about each
recipient's farming operation. Printed award booklets with profiles of award
recipients are available for distribution at workshops, field days, or
conferences. For a copy of this publication, send your name, shipping
address, and the number of copies you would like to Mandy Rodrigues at
