I too have used a large tiller with a furrower - till deeply, and then
furrow on either side of where you want the bed, and then rake over to get
it smooth. It works nicely and quickly, once you have everything tilled
deeply.

The furrower is nice for planting potatoes too - make a furrow, put the
potatoes in, and then cover over with a hoe - or you can run the furrower
over either side shallowly, and push the soil back in the furrow that way.

I hope one day to be working the soil in a way that I don't need to till
very much at all, as I want to be able to grow stuff with minimal
disturbance to the soil.

I am using straw to mulch as much of the garden as I can, hoping that this
will get me closer to my goal - and using fabric mulch and whatever else I
have from other years in other places as I don't think I have enough straw
bales to do the whole garden.

I am not sure what equipment you have to work with there. Tractor, tiller
or
what ever. There are numourous ways to build beds. I have built many abed
with
just a gardening fork and a rake. The bigger trybuilt tillers accept a broad
point attachment that comes with sweep boards that will lay up a bed in
notheing flat once the ground is tilled.
