my perception was that the years I trellised tomatillos also went with low yield and high insect damage. Maybe those were coincidences but for the past half a dozen or so years I've let my tomatillo plants sprawl and each year they seem to be happy campers (as opposed to obviously depressed trellised tomatillos). But this is in no way a scientific based experience.
