Roger,
I've tried 18" spacing for tomatos, but it is a lot of work to keep the tomatos from getting too bushy. At a close spacing you should remove the suckers to keep the plants from crowding out each other. I also tried 24" and they were still crowded together making harvesting the tomatos a challenge. It seems that no matter how much space that I give the tomatos, they seem to want to use it all. I did notice that the plants were a lot taller than I thought they would be and I keep ending up with a tomato hedge. This year I am trying 30" spacing. I'll see how much space they use.
I have noticed that the same variety can grow to different sizes from one year to another.
