we use metal conduit. 1" is generally big enough. bend it with a pipe bender. last for years.

By this point in the building trades and beyond(?) PVC is recognized as a fairly nasty product from a health and environment stand point.
I try to avoid it and am always looking for alternatives for hoops and others. Rebar seems to be to flexible.
