Tom,
I think when you are talking about most of the indeterminate varieties, it would not be advisable to even consider a closer than two foot spacing. Indeterminates need the space.
Using some of the more compact hybrids and pruning them, you might be able to get by with a closer spacing but then you open the plants up to having their air circulation reduced thus creating an envirnoment that makes it difficult to work in , not to mention the pressure from disease.
