I've used an outdoor wood "boiler" for years.
Boiler is a misnomer because it heats water for the heat transfer rather than
prooducing steam. I'm on my second one & they've improved greatly. I heat a
woodworking shop (over 2000 sq.ft. w/13' ceilings). Northeren WI has cold that
requires firing up from Oct thru May. I plan to expand to a green house that's
heated soon.
Why I choose the Central Boiler brand: It's EPA
approved, my woods in the back 40 is a renewable fuel source, shop scrap is a
fuel source, safety over indoor flame, support from my salesman, & water
test kit with optional treatment chemicals.
My experience: licensed boiler operator,
industrial boiler operator for several years, & residential
boiler operation (both steam & hot water). I've burned wood half of my
life as a primary or secondary heat source.
A better way IMHO is geothermal. I now use this for
my residence. The underground gridwork is buried 6 or 7 feet beneath my garden.
The energy input is electricity which runs the compressor, pumps & fan. We
get heat, domestic hot water & air conditioning from one unit. It was twice
the price of gas or oil furnaces initially. But I have used renewable
geothermal energy for the heat/cool part of the equation for over 6 years with
little fluctuation in my energy bills.
There are some biomass conversion products that
I've seen prototypes of. They directly convert "waste" to heat, electricity or
both. This could be the technology that makes cold climate green house a reality
for wanabee winter gardeners in any climate.
