There is one good way to find out. Place thermometers on the
>plastic both under and outside of the row covers and compare.

I decided to gather up some thermometers and play in my lettuce rows this
morning. Here are my findings.

It was a sunny day with highs ranging 65-70. It was cool enough to justify
a light jacket in the AM. There was light frost in low areas before sunup.

11:00AM On top of black plastic in area where no row cover was placed--100
degrees. On top of black plastic under row cover--90 degrees.

12:00 Noon Under black plastic with no row cover (thermometer facing
plastic)--110 degrees. Under black plastic with row cover (thermometer
facing plastic)--98 degrees.

1:00PM Under black plastic, no row cover, (thermometer facing the soil)--82
degrees. Under black plastic, with row cover, (thermometer facing soil)--96
degrees.

A repetition of the !2:00 Noon test around !:30- 2:00 revealed an
approximate reversal of the temps between the "no row cover" and the "with
row cover" sample.

This seems to agree with my findings that by early afternoon the temperature
differentials I was observing in the morning were reversing themselves as
the heat was apparently building up under the row cover.

Perhaps I should roll off the row cover to one side at mid day to avoid this
problem?
