I am still catching up with old emails that accumulated while I was away,
and came across a discussion between Rick and Jay about marketing. It
reminded me of a presentation I was at a few years ago - a couple that sells
beef offered 1 pound of ground beef, or maybe it was 2, for free, I think it
was. The invitations were made up, and perhaps put in the paper - I don't
know. People had to show up on their farm, and they were able to get a free
amount of groundbeef. While there, the couple was able to "sell" their
product, give a tour, make a personal connection, etc. They said they came
out very well in their promotion - people left with way more than their
pound or two, and they gained some long term customers. They were in
southern and eastern wisconsin, I believe.
If you are not able to sell all of your beef anyway, Rick, this might be a
way that you could get people to your farm to see your stewardship of the
land, etc - a lot of people care about that!
