I'm considering taking on an intern from out of the country for the
summer. How have you dealt with the following:
- Stipend - have you treated this as payroll item complete with
workmen's comp and all other deductions or is there a way around it?
I'm thinking of paying a % of Saturday market sales so could this be
treated as a commission instead? (I will talk with my accountant
also) A stipend is not required but I could not in good conscience
use this person as free labor and the availability of extra help will
allow us to produce the extra volume which justifies a booth at the
market.
- Automobile insurance - I will probably supply a vehicle for them
tro drive product to the Saturday market
- Health insurance - what if they get sick
- Housing, food - who pays?
- Liability - what if they get hurt while working for me?
I know there are a myriad of possible issues out there, I want to go
into it with my eyes wide open. This is part of a bona fide
educational program and the student will be getting a scholarship to
cover some of the costs.
