Any good potash has carbon, sodium or potassium hydroxide, trace minerals. Hydroxide is a strong base and you can use it to make soap.

I read an atricle in a magazine called The Furrow put out by John Deere. In the  article it said that the ash was potash and minerals took up in  the corn during the growing process. It was mentioned as good fertilzer in the garden and also a good ice melter in the winter.
