If there's any sheep raisers out there, black walnuts make wonderful natural brown dye for your wool. I just gather mine and toss them in a kettle, shells(black) and all and simmer them(yes, gloves are good). They need strained real well to get ALL the bits and pieces out then you can dye the wool with them. I like them because they don't need any mordant to set the dye. Liz M.
