    At my day job, my department head (a botantist here at the Natural Products Research Center (U of Miss) who specializes in medicinal plant agronomy), pointed out that the primary irritating chemicals in Urtica dioica (Stinging Nettle) are:
histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and acetylcholine. 
 
    There is no mention of formic acid in his scientific text (see Plant Anatomy, 4th edition, A. Fahn, Pergamon Press, 1990).
