At my day job,
my department head (a botantist here at the Natural Products Research
Center (U of Miss) who specializes in medicinal plant agronomy), pointed out
that the primary irritating chemicals in Urtica dioica (Stinging Nettle) are:
histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and
acetylcholine.
There is no mention of formic
acid in his scientific text (see Plant Anatomy, 4th edition, A. Fahn,
Pergamon Press, 1990).
